He was a man on considerable learning and had a taste for poetry, his poetical name being Nadir. On the desire of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, he learnt the art of European artillery and gunnery, from French. Later he also wrote a book in Persian on the Science of gunnery, called 'Muftah-ul-Qila', and worked on science of medicine, in which he was well versed.
